If only, you really have the heart—to throw one away. Especially, the ones grown here…locally…in Himachal—the Apple Bowl of India. And its begun..the apple season!!
What started as an experiment back in the British era, is today a major economy for the State. All courtesy, Samuel Evan Stokes (later Satyanand Stokes)—an American, who came to India on account of charity work, and who stayed on for his entire life. He first planted Red and Golden Delicious trees in Thanedar, and sold them to the public in 1926. Since then, summer through fall…it is apples here! All kinds, colours, size—it can be mind-boggling just understanding the names. Red Chief, Oregon Spur-II, Silver Spur, Red Spur, Well Spur etc are planted at lower altitudes (below 6500 ft). While, Royal Delicious, Red Delicious, Top Red, Vance Delicious, Skyline Supreme, Hardeman etc are planted at altitudes above 6500 ft. At roughly 7000 ft, the Shimla region enjoys the freshest produce from all over.
Produce—that caters to fresh eating apples, cooking apples and juicing apples (which ultimately also lead to wine and cider!). Apples that hold their shape, such as the Golden Delicious, are best for baking. Sweeter apples are good for making applesauce. Such details go on…the products only limited by your imagination and the locals’ innovation. Do indulge in sampling or buying a wide variety of products ranging from jams, jellies, cider, juices and wine. These are abundantly available almost everywhere in the region. And don’t just restrict yourself to the apple products. All fruits grown here cater to almost all the above. Delicious stuff too!
